Howth is the Cleanest Town in Ireland

For those of you who have often enjoyed the beauty and scenery of Howth you'll not be surprised that it has been declared the cleanest town in Ireland. In the 2008 survey of litter levels in 55 towns and cities by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL), Howth emerged as the overall winner of the league for 2008.
Irish Business Against Litter is an alliance of companies sharing a belief that continued economic prosperity - notably in the areas of tourism, food and direct foreign investment - is contingent on a clean, litter-free environment. The IBAL League monitors, in association with An Taisce, litter levels in towns and cities across Ireland and then ranks them in a league table format according to international standards. The initiative is co-funded by the Department of the Environment. The Award, which was presented to Howth last week, is testimony to the good work of Fingal County Council and the efforts of local tourism and business interests in the scenic fishing village.
The second Dublin location on the league table is Swords, also a Fingal town, at no. 14 up by over ten places in the space of the year.
An Taisce, which conducts the litter surveys, commented "Well done to Howth and Fingal County Council. This is Ireland as it should be. Hopefully other towns in Dublin will emulate in 2009”. The report went on to comment on the excellent cleanliness of Howth's streets and the superb presentation of its shops, signage, schools and roads.
The area has long been renowned for its fine scenery, picturesque harbour and reputation as a playground for Dublin's inhabitants and visitors. The people of Howth are immensely proud of this award as it showcases both the tremendous efforts by Fingal County Council and the Howth community alike but will hopefully highlight the breathtaking environment of the Howth Peninsula - perched so close to Dublin City.
The tourism interests and the Howth Sutton Baldoyle Chamber of Commerce plan to celebrate in style at an event at Wrights Findlater on Thursday next.
